The son of Sir Robert Kerridge, whose company owned Auckland's St James Theatre for more than 40 years, is calling for the building to be restored.
The venue, which opened 85 years ago on Friday, has stood derelict since being damaged by fire in 2007.
Bob Kerridge, who chairs the St James Auckland Charitable Trust, says he can't bear to see the theatre in its present condition.
He says the theatre's owner doesn't plan to restore it, but he hopes that the Auckland Council will buy the property.
A spokesperson for mayor Len Brown says he is working with the council, the community and the owner on options for restoring the St James.
