The Accident Compensation Corporation says there has been a reduction in falls in aged care facilities thanks to Vitamin D supplements.
The programme has been rolled out by ACC in collaboration with district health boards, the Ministry of Health and Aged Care.
ACC claim figures show a drop of 38% in falls in residential aged care facilities since the programme started in 2007. About three-quarters of residents receive Vitamin D supplements.
ACC says international evidence shows the supplements can help reduce falls by strengthening muscle and bones and improving posture and balance.
Programme manager Lee Henley says facilities are increasingly adopting the programme.
