A Queenstown man has described escaping major injury after his vehicle tumbled 40 metres off a cliff and into the Kawarau River.
The incident happened on Monday when Adam Dear was heading back to his work yard. He says a trailer he was towing pushed the back end of his ute out and it ended up rolling over a barrier.
Mr Dear ended in the river upside down but after about 20 seconds managed to escape through a window. He says the trailer broke off and stayed on the road.
Mr Dear has stitches in a knee and hands, plus a few bruises.
