A woman who saw a crash that left one man dead and another injured after a police pursuit in south Auckland believes it should never have happened.
The man killed was Steven Henare Tepania, who was 28.
He was a passenger in a car that fled officers carrying out number plate checks in Otara.
The police said just moments later the car hit another and flipped over, trapping the two inside.
The witness, Mary Edwards, said she was angry the pursuit took place, and police resources would be better used stopping alcohol abuse rather than chasing cars.
The Independent Police Conduct Authority and the police are investigating.
