Violent thunderstorms, torrential rain and lightning strikes have caused power cuts in parts of Northland this afternoon.
A lightning strike in the Far North cut power in Kaitaia for about 30 minutes early this afternoon, while a thunder and torrential rain in Whangarei sent shoppers scurrying for cover.
A Northpower spokesperson said a double lightning strike hit Whangarei's Kensington substation, cutting power to shops and offices for a few minutes before it was restored.
More heavy rain and high winds were expected later today, and further power cuts were possible, the spokesperson said.
