The organisation representing 150 telecommunications companies has unveiled a list of changes it says are vital if New Zealand is to remain competitive.
Telecommunications users association TUANZ said local councils should be compelled to include telecommunications when developing subdivisions as a basic requirement, along with roads and water.
TUANZ chief executive Craig Young said the group also wanted better funding for consumer lobby groups and improved access for systems such as fibre in apartment blocks with multiple owners.
"We want the New Zealand economy to continue to develop, particularly around connectivity, so we want to make sure that the framework that's in place post-2020 encourages that."
The wishlist was sent to to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) earlier this year. It is intended for a report on telecommunications after 2020, which is due out in the next few weeks.
