The police in Gisborne are investigating a serious sexual assault on two English tourists.
The women, aged in their late teens, were staying in a campervan on the beach front in Tokomaru Bay, north of the city.
Detective Sergeant Kevin Ford says at about 1am on Friday a man who had been in the vehicle beside the tourists, assaulted the women in their van over a period of two hours.
Their attacker is described as a tall, overweight and dark-skinned man, with a beard and moustache.
He's thought to be in his 20s or 30s.
The police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.
