For Georgia Nott, one half of brother-sister duo Broods, taking home four Tuis from the 50th annual Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards was a humbling experience, after several years of hard work.
Nott and her brother Caleb won Album of the Year, Best Group, Best Pop Album for Evergreen and the New Zealand On Air Radio Airplay Record of the Year award for the band's smash single Mother & Father.
Speaking to Morning Report today, Nott admitted they won a lot more than they thought they would.
"It's pretty crazy. We haven't got any better at acceptance speeches."
"We've watched the awards and we've seen our favourite New Zealand musicians go through and come out with armfuls of Tui awards and we thought 'one day let's try and get to that point when that can be us'. So to have four awards at the end of the night, including Album of the Year is just ridiculous. This is everything we wanted, but we didn't expect to get it, so it's really surreal and really humbling to have these awards, to show how hard we've worked for it."
Nott credited the group's songwriting efforts - with producer Joel Little heavily involved - for their success at the Awards, and said the way they wrote songs together had evolved in recent months.
"When we started writing, we came up with stuff on our own, then we would come together and decide what it's like and work on it together with Joel. And now we can go into the studio and write something from scratch all together and just play off each other
"That's a really, really cool thing, because songwriting is an exposing thing - when you write your music in front of other people, you're writing about your feelings, so it's a pretty special relationship me, Caleb and Joel have. It's something that has definitely taken us two years to find our way, of not being afraid of each other's opinions, but its awesome - we're all really, really close."
Other big winners of the night included Marlon Williams and Gin Wigmore, who won the best solo artist awards, while Lorde's Yellow Flicker Beat was named Single of the Year.
Nott said Lorde was a total inspiration, and not just for her music.
"It's the way she has taken on the world, she's very young, but she seems to have this amazing way of dealing with all the pressures and all the overwhelming fame that she has had in the last three years. And it's such an inspiring thing to see her hold herself so calm and collected. She's way better at speeches than us, that's for sure. We really need to get some lessons off her."
The pair are flying out of New Zealand tonight for a short Asian tour, playing in Djakarta, Bangkok, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Singapore for the first time.
