Shoppers in Wellington and Auckland have had problems paying by Eftpos this afternoon, with the system crashing just days out from Christmas.
The payment systems starting working again at 3pm today after being down for about half an hour.
ANZ Bank said a number of customers were affected during the network failure and it was investigating the cause.
Christmas shoppers headed to checkouts, only to be told the payment processing system was broken.
People could still buy their items by signing the receipt.
ANZ Bank said there were "intermittent network issues", which affected internet banking, goMoney and Eftpos, but they were now resolved.
