Police in Hamilton are on the hunt for a burglar who has been breaking into people's homes while they're out in the garden.

Detective Paul Slater said there had been two recent incidents involving elderly homeowners in Te Rapa.
He said the offender had entered the unlocked homes while the owners were in the garden and took handbags and wallets with cash in.
Mr Slater said he believed the two burglaries were linked and said the police had strong leads.
