A man is on the run after crashing into a petrol station in Masterton this morning, bringing down a corner of the roof over the forecourt.

The man drove his car into the station on High Street while being followed by officers, police said, leaving the roof of the forecourt partially collapsed.

Police were initially called to the man's home on another matter, they said, and arrived to find him leaving in his car.

They followed with their sirens on, trying to get him to pull over, but he ignored them and sped up while turning into the petrol station.

He misjudged the turn, police said, then drove up onto the curb and crashed into a petrol pump and a post holding up the station's forecourt roof.

The roof partially collapsed, but no one was injured.
