Resthome cooperating after resident mistreated

The Hamilton resthome where a patient was mistreated says it is fully cooperating with investigations.

A 23 year-old woman has been charged with assault at the Cascades retirement facility in Hamilton in June.

The charge comes after the Stuff website posted a video showing a caregiver slapping and mishandling 86-year-old dementia patient Piri Hemi.

The general manager of the home's owner Sanderson Group, Gary Curtis, said they are treating the allegations very seriously and the caregiver no longer worked for the company.

He said the incident was a huge shock as they are committed to their residents and aim to provide first class care and facilities.

Mr Hemi's son, Allan Hemi, told Checkpoint with John Campbell the family installed a hidden camera with a motion sensor in his room because they felt their concerns about his treatment were not being addressed.

"We put it near his bed so we could see what was happening, and a lot of the staff were great and they treated him like a king and that made us really happy.

"But you can see this lady who assaulted my dad was totally different from the other caregivers."

Mr Hemi said his father - who has limited mobility - is now being cared for at home, and was doing well.

"He's singing, he's happy, he's smiling again - so that's the main thing."

Waikato District Health Board's senior planning manager, Paul Keesing, said it would not be reviewing its contract with the rest home.

However, Mr Keesing said the care shown in the video was clearly unacceptable, and the resthome has until the end of the month to take corrective actions.
