Woman in SH1 crash dies in hospital

A woman critically injured in a car crash near Paekakariki yesterday has died in Wellington Hospital.

Te Rauoriwa Daphne Pomare, 79, from Levin, was driving a car which collided head-on with another vehicle on State Highway 1 yesterday morning. She was flown to hospital suffering critical injuries and died overnight.

The driver of the second car was taken to Wellington Hospital by ambulance with minor injuries and two passengers from that vehicle did not require medical treatment.

Police say an investigation is still being carried out into the circumstances of the crash, which forced the closure of the highway for about three hours.
