Just after 3.30pm the police launch Lady Elizabeth IV rescued two men from the water after their fishing kayak capsized between Petone and Somes Island.
Half an hour later, the launch towed a yacht to shore, after bad weather jeopardised their intended voyage to Auckland.
Police said the fact that the kayakers were wearing lifejackets in the choppy harbour waters helped save their lives.
