Forecaster Tuporo Marsters said the South Island would not be so lucky.
Mr Marsters said there was a severe weather warning for heavy rain on the West Coast; and a watch for severe gales from the Canterbury High Country to as far north as Wellington and Wairarapa on Saturday evening until Sunday afternoon.
Mr Marsters said campers and hikers should check the weather forecast for their area.
