New $6m classroom block for Canterbury school

7:32 pm on 12 June 2017

A new classroom block has opened at a Canterbury primary school today, as part of a package to modernise schools with high enrolments.

The government is spending $20 million to redevelop Rangiora Borough, Oxford Area, Ashgrove and Southbrook schools, which are in areas that have grown significantly since the Canterbury earthquakes in 2010 and 2011.

A $6m block of 12 classrooms opened at Rangiora Borough School today.

The associate education minister, Tim Macindoe, hoped the new building would boost student achievement by providing the best possible learning environment.

The government's investment in the four North Canterbury schools was in addition to the $14.9 million committed to redevelop Rangiora High School, and the $1.4 billion Christchurch Schools Rebuild programme.

A new school, Rangiora West, is scheduled to open in 2021.
