MetService has issued a heavy rain warning for Bay of Plenty and northern Gisborne, where up to 90mm may accumulate before 2am tomorrow.
Duty forecaster Tom Adams said 50mm had already fallen north of Gisborne.
"Pretty heavy falls of rain, right through today until the early hours of tomorrow morning, it's enough to cause issues like local flooding."
He said there was the possibility of rapidly rising rivers and streams.
