The officer was responding to a 111 call from a house in the suburb of Owhata overnight.

He was arresting a man for an assault on a woman when another person jumped a fence and hit him on the head with an object, knocking him out, police said.

Superintendent Andy McGregor said the officer was taken to Rotorua Hospital, then transferred to Waikato, and was sedated and in a stable condition.
