Discount fare for Wellington tertiary students welcomed

8:13 pm on 6 August 2017

Victoria University Students' Association says a discount fare for tertiary students on public transport is a big win for the city.

The Wellington Regional Council is proposing an all-day 25 percent discount for full-time students, the blind and the disabled on the capital's buses and trains.

It's also proposing a 25 percent discount for all customers travelling at off-peak times to encourage more patronage.

The student association's president, Rory Lenihan-Ikin, said the move follows years of campaigning by students.

"It's so important that education is accessible for all and that's why to be a student-friendly city Wellington really needs this."

He said Wellington was the only university city in the world that didn't have tertiary fares for students on public transport.
