Police were called to the crash on Hobson Street near the corner of Wellesly Street West just after 9am.
Auckland Central Sergeant Mark Hamilton said it was believed the pedestrian was trying to cross the road in peak hour traffic.
He said the man has been taken to hospital and was now in a stable condition.
"We're not sure exactly what's led to the collision - we're still working through all the circumstances and conditions that led up to this.
"It's far too early to know if anyone is at fault."
The bus driver is "obviously upset" that this has happened, he said.

The windscreen on the bus has been smashed in one corner and it was not clear whether there were passengers on the bus.
Traffic is slow around the crash, with several lanes blocked off as police carry out a scene investigation.
