A hotplate that had been left on led to the evacuation of the Ibis Hotel in Wyndham Street.

A guest at the hotel, John A'Beckett, was inside his room with his wife when the fire started.

"We just got into our room and there was a bang on the door for us to get out

"And when we come out the door, because it was on our floor we saw smoke everywhere ... we had to come down the fire escape."

A spokeswoman for the hotel said everyone had been moved to other locations for the night.

Wyndham Street reopened more than an hour after the fire was extinguished.
