4.5 quake rattles South Island

A magnitude 4.5 earthquake caused light shaking around St Arnaud and the top of the South Island this morning.

The quake was centred 35km north of Hanmer Springs at a depth of 59km.

GeoNet received more than 400 'felt reports' from around the Tasman district, the West Coast and Canterbury.

"The quake may have been felt in Blenheim, Cheviot, Culverden, Hanmer Springs, Kaikoura, Motueka, Murchison, Nelson, Reefton, Seddon, St Arnaud, Westport and surrounding localities," GeoNet said.
