Up to 30 businesses have applied for a share of a relief fund set up after cyclones Fehi and Gita, the Tasman district mayor says.

Parts of Nelson and Tasman were badly damaged by the two ex-tropical storms that hit in February.

A $100,000 government rescue package has been used by the Tasman District Council as the basis for its mayoral relief fund.

The application process attracted criticism from some businesses, who said it was too complicated.

Mayor Richard Kempthorne said he helped to create the forms, but never meant it to be an onerous process.

A staff member had been on hand to help, he said.

A small committee had been set up to decide how to distribute the fund.
