The display at 9.30pm from a barge anchored 450 metres north of Queens Wharf lit up the waterfront and echoed through the central business district.
The fireworks were part of a display show put on by the exclusive Seafearers club.
Many people on social media were left wondering who was celebrating with a big display.
So what was that extremely expensive-looking fireworks display in downtown Auckland about?

Rather unexpected #fireworks display over #Auckland harbour just now. Made even more dramatic by the multitude of echoes from the buildings in the city.

Auckland Transport's notice about the fireworks display said a 250 metre exclusion zone existed around the barge and mariners were asked to navigate with extreme caution.
