Whakatāne got a soaking overnight with nearly 100mm falling since midnight, MetService says.
More than 43mm of fell between 3am and 4am, but the rain has since eased.
Heavy rain watches are in place for Nelson, Marlborough Sounds and Taranaki through until to tomorrow, MetService said.
