A woman's lack of experience behind the wheel led to her driving into a lake and drowning, a corner's report states.

Avneel Ram, 26, was giving his wife Sheetal Ram, 31, driving lessons near a lake in the Christchurch suburb of Halswell in September last year.

The car was seen speeding towards the lake with Mr Ram running in after it.

Mr Ram drowned after running into the lake and diving down several times to try to free his wife.

Their bodies were pulled from the wreckage of the car which was found on its roof in 6m of water the next day.

The couple were declared dead 30 minutes after emergency services arrived on the scene.

Mr Ram was found near the vehicle with car keys in his hand and his wife in the back seat with the drivers side window down.

It's believed Mr Ram managed to pull the keys from the ignition after the car entered the lake.

It was only the second time Ms Ram had driven a car.

The first time was in Fiji six years earlier and involved her crashing.

She had not attempted to get behind the wheel again.

The couple were married in 2016 and left behind a six-month-old daughter.
