Police confirmed earlier today they were responding to an incident and the armed offenders squad was present.

They were "making enquiries" to establish what had taken place after being called to the town at 4.45pm.

Police said they received many calls about a shooting at a Putaruru marae late this afternoon.

But the police now say there is nothing to indicate that anyone was shot and there is no risk to the community.

A witness who spoke to RNZ said four ambulances, armed police and police dogs were all at the scene.

St John Ambulance confirmed staff were at the scene but refused to provide details.
