A person has been freed from a car that went off Paekākāriki Hill Road and fell 60m down a bank, police say.

Police said the 65-year-old man was being flown to hospital by helicopter.

They said emergency services were called to the scene north of Wellington about 8am.

Police said a person driving up the hill saw the car in the bush.

Fire and Emergency assistant area commander Matthew Abel said the car went down about 50 to 60 metres down the bank, and it was hard to find because of folliage.

"The firefighters located the car and the helicopter was called in," he said.

"It took a bit of time to get equipment down. Doors had to be cut off. The roof had to be cut off and a paramedic was dropped down from that rescue helicopter to assess the patient and stablise the patient."

The helicopter then used a winch to pull the man out, he said.
