Four people remain in hopsital after being seriously hurt in a crash on State Highway 1 north of Wellington this afternoon.
Police were called to the accident involving three vehicles near Ōtaki River Bridge just before 3pm.
One person has been airlifted to Palmerston North Hospital in a critical condition and another person - also critical - was airlifted to Wellington Hospital.
Two other people with serious injuries are being treated in Palmerston North Hospital.
The highway has now reopened but the police say the traffic is heavy.
The Serious Crash Unit has been advised.
