Police are speaking to a person of interest following a fatal stabbing in Greymouth.
Detective Senior Sergeant Jacqui Corner said a 41-year-old man was found with critical injuries on Cowper Street about 2am.
He was taken to Greymouth hospital and died shortly afterwards.
Greymouth District Councillor Patrick McBride said this morning's stabbing was another jolt for the town.
Mr McBride, whose portfolio includes safety and security, said it appears to have happened near the centre of town, but the victim was found near a backpacker establishment in a residential street.
It's concerning, especially so soon after a recent serious arson in the town, but the police appear to have it under control, he said.
"Well at this stage, it's a police matter. It sounds like it's obviously contained."
Police said a 17-year-old man was assisting them with their enquiries into the death and did not believe there was any risk to the public. Charges have yet to be laid.
Police want to speak to anybody who may have seen a late-1990s red Toyota Corolla passing through Greymouth in the early hours or anyone who saw a male dressed in dark clothing walking on Sids Rd, near Coal Creek.
