Two men have been arrested after 25 parking meters were broken into in Wellington in the past three weeks.

Police said the pair, aged 37 and 31, have been charged with wilful damage and theft.

The meters were damaged during the thefts, which netted coins, police said.

Police Inspector Wade Jennings said police increased their patrols in the central city during the investigation, and also worked with the city council.

The pair are due to appear in Wellington District Court on 3 August.
