Firefighters have contained a large scrub fire in North Canterbury.

A Fire Service spokesperson said that 11 appliances were sent to the scene on St Leonards Road near Culverden.

The blaze, which started just after 3.30pm, was being fanned by the strong north-westerlies that have battered Canterbury today.
Fire and Emergency said the fire was contained by 7.30pm. Two crews remained at the scene, dampening down hotspots.
