Trial date set for Ōpotiki killing two years ago

11:36 pm on 5 February 2019

The man accused of killing an elderly Ōpotiki man two years ago will stand trial next year.

In the High Court in Tauranga this morning, 50-year-old Harry Clements Matchitt entered a plea of not guilty to a charge of murder.

77-year-old Brian Albert Hilton died in July 2016, six days after what was initially believed to have been a fall in his home.

But late last year, fresh information led Police to re-investigate the death and Mr Matchitt was arrested.

The trial is set down for three weeks, beginning in the Rotorua High Court in July 2020.
