Problems last night with fog caused significant disruption.
MetService said a very sharp change brought the fog rolling in, reducing visibility to 100 metres.
This morning, several flights to Christchurch from regional centres have been cancelled, and a number of departures have been delayed.
Air New Zealand is advising anyone booked to travel via Christchurch to check the airport's website for the latest information.
MetService says the situation is improving and the fog is expected to lift before midday.
