A person has been taken to Christchurch Hospital with serious chemical burns.
A St John spokesperson said emergency services were called to Barton St in Woolston just after 2pm today.
Fire and Emergency services are carrying out a decontamination process and a spokesperson said it was unclear how the incident happened or what the magnitude of it was.
