An Air New Zealand flight bound for Palmerston North was forced to return to Auckland for an emergency landing early this afternoon.
Air New Zealand said the plane turned around after a smoke indicator warning light came on.
The emergency landing sparked a full scale emergency response, with St John ambulance and Fire and Emergency services on the scene.
An airport spokesperson said the flight landed safely around 12.30pm.
It says all passengers have been safely evacuated and engineering crews are investigating.
