Police found a loaded sawn-off shotgun in the front seat of a vehicle they pulled over in Auckland overnight.
Police said a suspicious vehicle was stopped by officers just before midnight, after being seen pulling into a driveway on Dominion Road before taking off again.
Two people were arrested and a loaded semi-automatic shotgun was seized in Newton from a stolen vehicle with false plates.
A 27-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman will be appearing at the Auckland District Court today.
It follows the fatal shooting of a police officer in west Auckland on Friday during a routine vehicle stop.
Senior Sergeant Alan Rowland said the latest incident was another example of officers stopping offenders in vehicles with loaded firearms.
He said it highlighted the very real dangers staff faced every day.
