Three people are in police custody in Whanganui after members of the public reported hearing gunshots.

Police were called to the Castlecliff area just after 1pm this afternoon when residents saw two men carrying a firearm.
The armed offenders squad was called, cordons were put in place, and a number of schools went into lockdown as a precaution.
Police say there are no injuries.
