A low moving across the centre of the country could bring heavy rain and strong winds to Marlborough and Canterbury, and gales to the West Coast.
Snow is expected in many of the South Island alpine passes this afternoon.
The area between Hawke's Bay and Gisborne will get a deluge of up to 160mm with the worst falls predicted for tomorrow afternoon.
