Heavy rain hits Fiordland

Heavy rain and gales are expected in Westland, Fiordland and Southland today.

A front is likely to move slowly over Fiordland and south Westland today, MetService said.

A heavy rain warning has been issued for Fiordland north of Resolution Island for the period to 7pm tonight.

Up to 100mm of rain is expected, with peak intensities of up to 25mm an hour.

A strong wind watch is in place for Fiordland south of George Sound, and for Southland west of Invercargill until 1pm today.

North to northwest winds could reach severe gale strength in exposed places in Fiordland and Southland.

The front in the west of the South Island is forecast to strengthen slightly on Monday.

Heavy rain is possible in Fiordland and Westland from Monday to Wednesday, and in Buller and Nelson on Wednesday, MetService said.
