A man was critically injured in a violent attack in South Auckland last night and was taken to Middlemore Hospital for surgery.
It happened in Glenross Drive in the suburb of Wattle Downs at about 10.20pm.
Detective Inspector Chris Barry said police suspect more than one offender was involved.
As enquiries continue, police are working to establish the motive and identify the offenders.
