The discovery of clothing near a Wellington beach has sparked a search for a man seen entering the water there at 9pm last night - around the time the clothing was found.

The man entering the water was wearing a pair of black shorts.
Police are unsure if the two things are connected but are hoping to confirm the owner of the clothes is safe.
The clothing found at Hataitai beach includes a faded black T-shirt, green and orange Nike running shoes and a pair of green and white ankle socks.
Anyone who saw the man or saw someone wearing the clothes described is asked to contact police on 105 and quote event P045434543.
