Injured surfer rescued after walker spots message

An Auckland surfer has been rescued from a remote beach after writing the word "help" in the sand in huge letters.

The man was seen writing the word before collapsing on the sand. The witness was a person walking on a track above Mercer beach this afternoon.

A Surf Life Saving rescue jetski was sent from Piha with two lifeguards. They found the man, who had serious injuries.

They say the surfer had lost his board and had been swept onto rocks before making it to shore.
