Air New Zealand believes its latest destination will be a significant opportunity for New Zealand and Australia.

The national airline plans to fly direct from Auckland to Hobart in Tasmania when quarantine-free travel opens up.

Chief executive Greg Foran said it would not only be an economic boost for Auckland and tourism hotspots such as Rotorua and Queenstown, but New Zealanders would also be able to experience the richness of Australia's second-oldest city.

The no-stop flights will run on Thursdays and Sundays.

It is hoped a two-way Australian bubble will be in place by the end of April.
