The Wellington Trades Hall has been designated a category one heritage building.
The hall opened on Vivian Street in 1929 and is historically significant for its association with the country's union movement.
It was also the site of New Zealand's first fatal terrorist attack, in which a bomb killed caretaker Ernie Abbot.
Today marks the 37th anniversary of the attack, for which no-one has ever been charged.
The building was recently earthquake strengthened, which was partly funded through the council's heritage fund.
An event to celebrate the new listing was held on Friday.
