Power was out in a large swathe of the North Island's central plateau region this morning.

In an update after 11am, Transpower said power was being restored to the affected areas and some may already have their electricity back.
It said the cause of the outage was unknown and further investigation would be undertaken.
Places still without electricity include Aukopae, Hikumutu, Kirikau, Matapuna, Okahukura, Taringamotu and Taumarunui.
Power should be back on there about 1pm.
