Police are thanking people who helped an elderly man who was seriously injured in an attack in Hastings this morning.

The man, in his 70s, was assaulted in the King Street-Heretaunga St area about 11am.
Members of the public called emergency services and provided first aid until an ambulance arrived.
A 27-year-old man faces three assault charges and is due to appear in Hastings District Court tomorrow.
