Rescuers have managed to free a group of dolphins that had become stranded in Porirua Harbour north of Wellington, however one of the dolphins has died.
Rescuers managed to get them back into the water and an inflatable boat took them into deeper sea off the Wellington coastline.
But Ingrid Visser from Whale Rescue said one of the dolphins didn't make it.
She said it's possible the dolphin that died was already sick when the pod stranded.
But she said to prevent them restranding, she is recommending the Department of Conservation takes them by boat a kilometre offshore.
