A man spotted driving erratically at speed through Dunedin left his car on the footpath outside the central police station and ran inside, chased by a police dog hander and dog.
About 1am on Friday members of the public reported a vehicle driving erratically through central Dunedin.
The car was going the wrong way down a one-way street, driving on the footpath at high speed near through the university precinct and going airborne over a speed bump outside the Dunedin Railway Station.
The vehicle was then seen twice going through an alleyway at the Dunedin Central Police Station in an attempt to bait police into a pursuit, Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen said.
"No pursuit was initiated ... and police used other tactics to trying and stop this vehicle," he said.
"Police attempted to stop the vehicle using road spikes due to the risk he posed to the public, however, this was unsuccessful.
"The driver drove onto the footpath at the entrance of the police station and ran. He was chased by a police dog handler and dog but ran into the police station watch house and handed himself in."
A man has been arrested for dangerous driving and other driving related offences, Dinnissen said.
The vehicle was impounded.
