Emergency services were called to Marine Parade after the child got into difficulty in the water yesterday afternoon.

Four police officers and a member of the public went into the water to try to save the child, but were unsuccessful.

Last February, a seven-year-old boy drowned in the sea off Marine Parade, prompting calls for more signs.

The beach is considered dangerous and unsafe for swimming, with a sudden drop off and risk of unexpected waves.

A council spokesperson said they were unable to make further comments at this sad time.
